These practices apply whether a company is replacing paper travellers, improving WIP visibility or establishing the production-execution foundation for a broader MES and APS strategy.
01Define the production object clearly
Decide what the system is moving and controlling: production order, work package, batch, assembly, serialised unit, repair job or another defined object.

02Use meaningful route operations

05Set target time with tolerance
Use a target duration and deliberate tolerance for each route operation, supported by an overall required-by or shipping date.

06Capture execution where it happens
Record acceptance, start, pause, hold, completion, quantities, labour/resource time, material use, scrap and rework at the work centre.

07Make handoffs explicit
Completing one operation does not prove the next section has received the work.

08Structure exceptions
Holds, failed checks, shortages, scrap and rework should use controlled reasons and consequences.

09Control WIP by queue and age
Total WIP alone is not enough. Review incoming queues, active work, holds, ageing and work waiting for quality or approval.

10Use QR codes to remove friction
QR technology should shorten the path to the correct live record, not become a separate data model.
